Young workers

If you are over school leaving age but under 18 you are classed as a young worker.

The working week and breaks

You should not normally work for more than 8 hours a day or 40 hours per week.

Once you have worked 4½ hours you are entitled to a rest break of 30 minutes. You should have a daily break of 12 hours between your work hours and should have two days rest in a week. These two days' rest should also be taken together with no working in between them.

Adult workers

If you are over 18 you are classed as an Adult worker.

The working week and breaks

You should not normally work more than 48 hours per week, unless you choose to, or you work in a particular sector where this may be necessary.

You are entitled to breaks in your work:

  • Rest Breaks – lunch breaks or tea breaks, or other short breaks during your working day
  • Daily Breaks from Work
  • Weekly Breaks from Work
