Wages and allowances

Once you start work you'll be paid a wage. There's a minimum wage threshold and the current rates are:

  • The development rate for workers aged 16 -17 £3.57 per hour.
  • The Development rate for workers aged 18-21 inclusive £4.83 per hour
  • Main (adult) rate for workers aged 22 and over £5.80 per hour

Apprentices who are over 19 and have completed a year of their apprenticeship are entitled to the National Minimum Wage.

Visit Directgov  for more information or telephone the Pay and Work Rights helpline on 0800 917 2368.

If you get an Apprenticeship and are employed you'll be paid a wage that's usually the going rate for the job, but you'll pay Income Tax if you earn over £6475 a year.

If you go into Foundation Learning you might get EMA.
